Alfa Atlântica Social and Cultural Responsibility

Alfa Atlântica promotes the personal and collective development of workers on its construction sites, contributing to the strengthening of issues related to citizenship, sustainability, mental health and culture. As a central activity, we set up an Art and Humanities Workshop on the construction sites where workers take part in meetings and workshops together with professionals from the areas of arts, philosophy and socio-environmental education, aiming at quality of life in the daily work routine and the construction of sustainable values.

The activities take place during working hours, valuing the worker as a producer of knowledge, in addition to being a builder of walls. The construction site then becomes a space for the exchange of knowledge where “teaching and learning” become collective responsibility, strengthening the relationship between workers and the place where they live and work.

The project is perceived by workers as a moment of pause, which prioritizes the use of different intelligences, little explored in the day-to-day work. This stimulus helps workers communicate better with people and expand their ability to see solutions to problems. There are many reports of workers referring to the initiative as something that helps them “have more ideas”. This suggests an increase in creativity. These results are based on a critical reflection on the reality of the environment in which they are inserted, gradually making them aware and capable of transforming their own lives and helping other people grow.

The complexity of these issues, relevant not only to Alfa Atlântica’s Sociocultural Program, but to all social regeneration processes, implies the use of new methodologies and action strategies. In this way, we intend to build a new reality based on the re-signification of work environments, offering workers a creative, diverse experience that enhances their knowledge, skills and self-esteem.

Partnerships for Development

UMINHO

The University of Minho - EAAD (School of Architecture, Art and Design) and the Alfa Atlântica Construction Company are launching a sociocultural innovation project focused on artistic practice and interdisciplinarity between the areas of architecture, art and design. In this context, workers, students, teachers and artists come together with the intention of generating knowledge from the interpersonal relationships created in the daily work of construction sites, expanding the possibilities of becoming increasingly connected with the world and with ourselves.

Partnerships for Development

CIAJG

Cities must play a fundamental role in education for citizenship and in the construction of the culture of a people. This challenge led us to find partnerships that could expand the practice of what we at Alfa Atlântica take the liberty of calling "urban acupuncture", a concept that enhances people's perception of the city, triggering a process of transformation and consolidation of the locations in which they live. That said, nothing is more appropriate than to establish a partnership with CIAJG (José Guimarães International Arts Center), a sociocultural facility located in the city of Guimarães. The partnership brings the public knowledge of the CIAJG collection through enlargements of the work of artist José de Guimarães, which are displayed on the facades of the shipyards. In this way, we strengthen the public-private partnership and break down the boundaries between the "museum" and the city, expanding knowledge and fostering the formation of an audience for the arts.

"Works of art are not made to be caged. They must be made to travel."
